Advocacy Task Force Session 5

Thursday, November 7, 2024
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM (EST)
This webinar will be held via Zoom.
Category: Advocacy Event

This webinar is the fifth of the 2024 Advocacy Task Force sessions. However, anyone is welcome to join at any time.

Please join our fifth Advocacy Task Force session, we will hear from Susan Ferguson of AccessAbility* about their home modification program and advocacy efforts. Following the presentation, we will have an open forum on:

  • going over some proposed (yet exciting!) changes pertaining to this advocacy group, review of / requesting input on home repair advocacy documents, and looking ahead for our 2025 housing preservation advocacy day.

AccessABILITY is a Center for Independent Living and a Disability Rights Organization serving Indianapolis and the seven surrounding counties. This organization advocates on behalf of people with disabilities to exercise their rights to establish and maintain control over their lives. They are a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting people with disabilities in their own personal journey to independence.

The Advocacy Task Force will meet on a regular, bi-monthly basis (12 sessions over 24 months). This group will collaborate, strategize, and exchange ideas and information as it relates to developing and advancing the coalition's advocacy platform goals. Moreover, these sessions will include opportunities to hear from and learn from others engaged in housing preservation efforts.

Why is home repair important for preserving affordable housing?

Many people consider affordable housing in the form of vouchers, rental assistance, tax credits, or newly constructed homes with low-interest loans. Yet, we seek to demonstrate through evidence-based practices that home repair/rehabilitation are integral solutions to the housing crises for low and moderate-income households. Home repair and modification programs can:

  • proactively reduce homelessness
  • protect generational assets
  • stabilize neighborhoods and communities at large
  • prevent illness and injury

We must invest sufficient resources into keeping affordable homes in conditions that are livable, safe, and healthy.
