This pre-conference workshop, Comprehensive Health, Safety and Energy Efficiency Housing Assessments and Interventions, will be led by Hector Moreno of Green & Healthy Homes Initiative.

This session is an in-depth training on the root causes, health impacts, and cost-effective control strategies for home-based environmental hazards commonly encountered by Healthy Homes and energy efficiency/weatherization staff. This workshop is intended to develop an in-depth understanding and application of the Comprehensive Housing Assessment and Intervention Model.

Some of the topics that will be addressed in this workshop include:

  • The comprehensive assessment process
  • Hazard prioritization & risk management
  • Developing a prescriptive scope of work
  • Sustainable intervention measures
  • Injury prevention for children and older adults
  • Moisture, mold, and other biological concerns
  • Lead-based paint hazards and control
  • Asbestos and radon hazards and control

Hector Moreno, a Subject Matter Expert in Building Health, Safety & Performance with Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI), will lead this training.

Hector Moreno oversees the Quality Assurance & Quality Control program for Housing Interventions and, as GHHI’s Building Performance Subject Matter Expert, provides technical support GHHI sites in housing environmental and energy matters.

 Before coming to GHHI, Mr. Moreno worked for 16 years at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in Cincinnati, Ohio as a Microbiologist and Environmental Scientist. He later joined the Cincinnati Health Department in Ohio where he worked as an Environmental Health Sanitarian enforcing food safety codes and addressing indoor environmental factors affecting public health.

 Mr. Moreno holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico. He is fluent in Spanish. He is an active member of the National Environmental Health Association, a licensed Pest Control Operator in Maryland, Mold Inspector, a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Certified Energy Auditor and BPI Quality Control Inspector.
