Segregated by Design Film Viewing & Discussion
To kick off our Anti-Racism in Practice Group for 2024, we will view the 17-minute film, Segregated by Design, based on the book The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How our Government Segregated America by Richard Rothstein, who also narrates. Come prepared to discuss key takeaways and steps we can put into action at our own organizations. Deanne Everton, Executive Director of Rebuilding Together of Silicon Valley, will lead our discussion.
"Segregated by Design examines the forgotten history of how our federal, state and local governments unconstitutionally segregated every major metropolitan area in America through law and policy." Read more about the film here.
Every session of the Anti-Racism in Practice Group this year will have pre-work to complete ahead of the meeting & takeaways to put into action afterwards. For our first meeting, we ask that all participants read this article by the ACLU, which provides an overview of the importance of Fair Housing and a call to action for those of us working in the housing space: "Few fights are more pivotal to ending systemic inequality than the fight for fair and stable housing."
Our meetings this year will cover different topics in DEI & the home repair space such as:
- Hiring & onboarding new staff
- DEI with volunteers
- Addressing unwelcoming symbols with homeowners
- Engaging communities with different lived experiences
- Preserving generational wealth and family assets
